Tourism in Northumberland County

The Northumberland County Chamber Visitors Bureau is the destination marketing organization for Northumberland County. The CVCOC is responsible for promoting and marketing Northumberland County as a premier visitor, convention and meeting destination.

The Convention & Visitors Bureau aggressively pursues several target markets that are compatible with the Northumberland County product mix. Those markets include consumer/ leisure, children’s camps, RV, motorcycle, bicycle, agricultural, sports, corporate meeting planner, association meeting planner, tour operator and niche group markets. Festival and special events are also important components.

From a destination prospective, Northumberland County has been branded as a vibrant community. Upscale shopping and dining opportunities with an abundance of amenities normally found in a much larger community are components of the brand. The brand’s focal point is Northumberland County’s City Hall and Peterson Plaza, with emphasis on fine and performing arts, unique dining and shopping opportunities, the historic downtown area and the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay. The Bureau’s promotional efforts are designed to make the advertising campaign more broad based and targets a larger segment of the available market. The advertising budget is dedicated to print, television and digital media. The tagline used in conjunction with the brand is “Retreat. Relax. Always a Great Time in Northumberland County.” “Retreat” refers to the meeting and convention market and “Relax” reaches the leisure market.

The NCOC’s director of sales in conjunction with hotel sales staffs tirelessly works the marketplace attracting the group market to Northumberland County for meetings, retreats and conferences. The communication’s manager aggressively keeps Northumberland County and numerous events and attraction in front of consumers, utilizing a variety of social media platforms. Research techniques are used to determine potential markets and new sales tools have been introduced to attract those markets. Our website and our visitor guides are continually updated. Companion brochures providing hotel and restaurant information plus an annual calendar of events are also important marketing tools, which are updated several times each year. Northumberland County post cards, smart media television and our digital sign, located in front of the Visitors Center are additional tools used to help sell the community. Visitor numbers continue to increase annually. This past year approximately 76% of our visitors were from other Virginia communities, with the largest number coming from Northern Virginia and the Richmond area.

Tourism creates over 1,500 jobs and is an important industry to Northumberland. Visitors spent $91.1 million dollars and generated over $4.3 million dollars in sales tax revenue last year. These dollars help provide fire protection, law enforcement personnel and equipment, parks, streets, roads and other amenities that Northumberland County residents depend on. That’s a savings of over $4.3 million dollar that residents of Northumberland County and Northumberland County Country don’t have to provide, thanks to visitors spending time and money in our community!
